A take-home resource
You Lead,
I Follow
A simple way to step into your child’s world, strengthen connection, and make everyday play feel more meaningful.
Connection through play
Your child already knows how to lead.
For just 5–10 minutes, let your child choose what and how to play while you follow with warm attention. You don’t need the perfect toy, a lesson, or a plan. Your presence is the important part.
Why it matters
Small moments of following can build something big.
Connection
Your focused attention communicates that being with your child matters—not only teaching, correcting, or completing a task.
Confidence
When your child gets to make safe choices, they experience themselves as capable, creative, and worth listening to.
Expression
Play gives young children a natural way to show feelings and experiences they may not yet have words to explain.
Try it at home
Five minutes is enough to begin.
This is not about playing “correctly.” It is a short, doable practice in giving your child your attention while they take the lead.
Set aside 5–10 minutes.
Put all distractions away and choose a time when you can be fully present.
Let your child choose.
They select the toy, activity, characters, and direction of the play.
Describe what you notice.
Follow the action with simple observations instead of filling the space with questions.
Reflect feelings and effort.
Notice their determination, frustration, excitement, and pride without trying to change the feeling.
Words you can borrow
Follow without taking over.
“You know exactly what you want to do.”
“You’re working really hard on that.”
“That didn’t go the way you wanted.”
“You decided the blue one goes here.”
Try a little less…
- Asking question after question
- Teaching or quizzing during play
- Correcting the way your child plays
- Taking over when they struggle
And a little more…
- Watching with genuine interest
- Describing what your child is doing
- Reflecting their feelings
- Trusting their creativity and choices
You don’t have to figure it out alone
